If you're looking for a way to improve your health and wellness, daily infrared sauna bathing may be the answer.
Numerous studies have shown the benefits of regular sauna bathing, including improved circulation, increased detoxification, improved skin health and more.
And now, a global questionnaire-based study has further confirmed these benefits.
The study, which was conducted from October 2016 to October 2017, surveyed regular sauna bathers on their individual characteristics, sauna habits and perceived health and wellness experiences.
The results showed that daily sauna bathing had a positive impact on physical and mental indicators of well-being, as measured by the SF-12 quality of life scoring tool.
As any sauna-goer knows, there are many benefits to be had from infrared sauna therapy.
Daily sessions can help to improve circulation, relieve pain, reduce stress and promote relaxation.
In the global sauna survey, 572 people were asked about their reasons for sauna bathing.
482 valid responses were generated, and the results showed that both men and women equally enjoy the benefits of infrared sauna therapy.
The majority of respondents were well-educated and of normal-to-overweight status, and most reported that the key reasons indicated for sauna-bathing included relaxation/stress reduction, pain relief and socializing.
So if you're looking for a way to improve your health and well-being, while being social, daily infrared sauna therapy may be just what you need.
Nearly a third of respondents who use daily saunas reported medical conditions and of this subset, those with back/musculoskeletal pain and mental issues cited the greatest improvements in their conditions with sauna-bathing.
Of all respondents, 83.5% reported sleep benefits after sauna use.
The survey found that daily sauna use offers significant benefits, the top 3 being:
Sauna use has been shown to improve the symptoms of chronic pain due to the lowering of inflammation and improved circulation.
A daily sauna can help improve your circulation by dilating blood vessels and increasing blood flow.
This increased blood flow helps to reduce inflammation throughout the body.
In addition, the heat of the sauna can help to relax muscles and relieve tension, supporting sleep by helping you relax.
As a result, daily sauna use can be an effective way to reduce the pain and stiffness of chronic conditions like arthritis.
Sauna use has been shown to improve the symptoms of mental health but more studies are needed to understand why.
The three groups of people who used saunas showed differing levels of mental and physical well-being.
The more frequent bathers in Group 2 who sauna bathed between 5-15 times a month had slightly higher scores of wellness than those that only went to the sauna once or twice per month (Group 1), and those who went more than 15 times a month (Group 3).
There was no difference between Groups 1 and 3 when it came down to their respective degrees of wellness measures - this could be because these participants were already relatively healthy either way!
A deterrent to the study findings was the few complaints about sauna bathing. Out of 482 responses, reports came from two people who had chest pain and one with an eye irritation requiring hospitalization.
The study found that the majority of participants enjoy going to the sauna for relaxation and stress relief.
It also showed that there are some health benefits to using a sauna, such as mental well-being and better sleep.
However, this is just the beginning of what we know about the therapeutic potential of saunas.
With continued research into the effects of sauna use, we hope to see even more people enjoying all the great benefits this traditional form of therapy has to offer.
